Ted Brewer designed the Whitby 42 in 1971 for Whitby Boat Works in Canada. She has a 13-foot beam, 32-foot 8-inch waterline, and a moderate 5-foot draft. High freeboard allows a commodious interior, a spacious engine room, and a very comfortable aft cabin. Ample water tankage of 290 gallons provides for showers in two heads, and a 210-gallon fuel capacity assures good range under power. A cavernous refrigerator/freezer keeps perishables during an extended cruise, a locker for wet oilskins abuts the main companionway ladder, and a handy workbench sits in the passage aft by the engine room.
Why Whitby 42’s are such a great cruising boat.Below decks, she is bright and open. Not like living in a cave.Engine room is spacious and easy to work on the engine, and other equipment.
The aft cabin has its own companionway to the cockpit and a walkthrough which is a safety concern.
Whitby 42’s were spec’d for a 45 HP engine. When they approached Ford Lehman for the engine, Lehman supplied 85HP engines for the same cost. I will say that there is no better marine engine than the Ford Lehman. We have never had one issue with it and have changed oil and fuel filters every 150 hours.
Her full keel is encapsulated. If going aground, the hull takes the full impact. Most modern boats have their keels bolted and glued on and you know what happens when they hit bottom.
Whitby’s have the most storage and tankage (water and fuel) of any boat on the market. Unbelievable the amount of storage space.
Her cockpit is deep and roomy.
Ketch rig is great no matter what the weather. If it blows, she is very comfortable under jib and mizzen.
Her hull and deck are built like a brick. Very well built boats with solid bottoms and only cored from the waterline to the gunwhales.
Whitby 42’s have a workbench which is very handy.

"Duchess" is one of the cleanest examples of the Whitby 42 that I have come across.  The current owners have lovingly cared for her for 19 years.  She has been to the Bahamas numerous times, cruised the East Coast and is very comfortable in any offshore passage.  From her yellow hull, new canvas and freshly applied varnished teak she is ready to continue her proven cruising capability.

Exterior
The stable Whitby 42 has wide side decks with boarding gates in the lifelines port and starboard for easy on and off.  There is also a sturdy boarding ladder at the stern to use while at anchor.  The center cockpit gives great protection from the elements while at sea or anchor. It is an easy step from the cockpit to the side deck and an easy walk fore or aft along the decks.  There is nice space on the foredeck for sail handling and on the aft deck for lounging or cleaning a fish. The bow has a dual roller system with electric windlass.  The headsail is on a roller furling. The canvas is in excellent condition with a dodger and bimini for cockpit protection.

Interior
The cockpit gives you access to the aft stateroom and main cabin through fore and aft companionways.  The aft access gives you access to the main cabin with an athwart ships master berth and large aft head with shower. You can move forward through the main cabin access to the engine room on the port side of the hallway and tool storage and a work bench on the right.  The engine room is a large space with room for a generator if desired, batteries, mechanical, filters and bilge access. Moving forward out into the main salon you have the charttable on the starboard side and the galley on the port side.  Firdge and freezer with plenty of storage cabinets and double sink. The dining table when not in use folds up to allow a great space in the mainsalon for passages. Moving forward is the forward head with shower and lots of storage.  All the way forward is the vberth with more storage and hanging lockers. The upholstery through out is in excellent condition along with all of the wood work.
